Frosthaven 1st Printing vs Newer Printings: What Buyers Should Know

Quick answer

If you want the original 1st printing with its specific components and are okay with US-only shipping, the Frosthaven 1st Printing is a solid choice. Otherwise, newer printings may offer minor component updates but often at a higher price or with different availability. Check the product listing for exact printing details before buying.

What is a printing, and why does it matter?

A printing is a single production run of a game. Publishers often make small adjustments between printings, such as fixing typos, updating component quality, or changing packaging. These changes are usually not announced as new editions, so two copies of Frosthaven can differ slightly even if they look the same on the shelf.

For Frosthaven, the 1st printing was the first large-scale production. Later printings may incorporate errata or minor improvements, but they are not fundamentally different games. The core experience remains the same.

Are there gameplay differences between printings?

No. All printings of Frosthaven contain the same 138-scenario campaign, 17 characters, and core systems. Any changes between printings are cosmetic or component-related, not gameplay-altering. You will not miss out on content by choosing one printing over another.

How can I tell which printing I have?

Check the copyright page or the side of the box. Printings are often indicated by a small number line or a phrase like 'First Printing' or 'Second Printing.' If you are buying online, ask the seller for a photo of the box bottom or copyright page. For the Frosthaven 1st Printing, the product listing explicitly states '1st Printing' in the title.

Should I buy the 1st printing or wait for a newer one?

It depends on your priorities. The 1st printing may be the only version available at a given time, and it often comes at a discount compared to later printings. However, if you prefer to have the latest minor fixes, you might wait for a newer printing. Note that newer printings are not always readily available and may not include the same extras.

If you are in the US and want the 1st printing, the Frosthaven (1st Printing) from Cephalofair ships from the US only, which can be a deciding factor for international buyers.

Does the 1st printing have known errors?
